The Quest to BE.

As far as I can remember, my Mama used to sing Doris Day's song. It goes like this:

When I was just a little girl
I asked my mother, what will I be
Will I be pretty, will I be rich
Here's what she said to me.

Que Sera, Sera,
Whatever will be, will be
The future's not ours, to see
Que Sera, Sera
What will be, will be.

A lot of interpretations have been made for this classic song featured in the movie, The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956). Some people say that it is an expression used in analogy to a present- we can do nothing but just open and see what's inside. Others say it is just an old saying. Most people say it doesn't need any deep meanings; the song just tells its listeners that we just have to accept what's in store for every person.

For someone born in the Generation Y, I respectfully disagree with anything being shared by the song. Though it may be true that "The future's not ours, to see...", still it is our very own responsibility to shape who we want to be in the future. Every triumph and every failure are like scars that will bury deep and later, serve as a foundation of who we are and who we will be. As the Spice Girls sang it:

Dedication, celebration, illumination, good vibration
Motivation, domination, baby nation, recreation, imagination...

The idea may be simple but it takes a lot of courage, sustainability and discomfort to prepare and take a place in the world. It should not be any part of a question to be addressed to anyone other than ourselves. We may have been born in a shabby place but I believe that extravagance is something we deserve as well, not for own selfishness, but for others to grab hope when all they see is a flicker of it.

It is an ongoing battle within us.
Seriously, who are you? And who do you want to BE?
